Topic: Simple Past Tense                    

Second Class, Third Period                                                      


 WARM UPS:

Warm-up:  " Title: Sentences Strips; (10 min)
-       Students will work in groups of three. Then, they are going to choose a name for their group and choose a representative,  they are going to be given sentence strips in simple past tense in order to find the correct order of the sentences given, then the representative is going to run and write the sentences on the board. Next the teacher is going to read the sentences formed aloud and check if the sentences had been wrote in the correct form. The group which has more correct sentences is going to win.


PRESENTATION:

(Reading activity; Appendix "A") (10 min)

-Appendix "A"



-Before students read, by looking the pictures on the reading, ask questions about what is their impression, ask what do you think that the reading is about?. Then, ask them to look for new vocabulary and explain it them. Then, ask students to read and pay attention to the reading about Ronaldo´s Vacation. After student work in the  reading, ask them to answers the questions related with the reading.


GRAMMAR EXPLANATION:  

-       The Simple Past Tense
-       Review of regular verbs and introduce Irregular verbs in simple past describing their last weekend, holiday, vacation, etc.





Simple past Tense- Use

When do we use the Simple Past?

 For actions that happened in the past
The past simple is the most usual tense for talking about things that happened or have finished before now. Very often we use a word or expression of finished time with this tense. In the following example sentences the expressions of finished time are shown in bold

The simple past tense refers to
a. action which occurred at a specific time in the past
b. completed action
c. past status

Form
- with regular verbs: infinitive + -ed
- with irregular verbs: 2nd column of the table of the irregular verbs


Structure: to make the past simple tense, we use:
past form only
or
auxiliary did + base form
Here you can see examples of the past form and base form for irregular verbs and regular verbs:


Examples:

Affirmative form:
1. She came to Germany two years ago.
2. It rained every day for a week on my               vacation.
3. Columbus discovered America in 1492.
4. I played tennis at the weekend.
5. I didn't see you yesterday. 
Negative form:
My mother went not shopping on Saturday
 He didn't buy anything.
I didn't know the answer.
Interrogative  form:
Were you in school?
How did you do that?
Did you see the film on TV last night?
Why didn't you do your homework?


Other Examples:
I saw a movie yesterday.
I didn't see a play yesterday.
Last year, I traveled to Japan.
Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
Did you have dinner last night?
She washed her car.
He didn't wash his car.

ACTIVITY #1 
 (Writing activity; Appendix "B")

- Ask students to work in the appendix "B", exercise A. They have to change the sentences in simple present to simple past.



Exercises

Change the verbs in the following sentence into past tense.
1. Yesterday, I go to the restaurant with a client.
2. We drive around the parking lot for 20 minutes in order to find a parking space.
3. When we arrive at the restaurant, the place is full.
4. The waitress asks us if we have reservations.
5. I say, "No, my secretary forgets to make them."
6. The waitress tells us to come back in two hours.
7. My client and I slowly walk back to the car.
8. Then we see a small grocery store.
9. We stop in the grocery store and buy some sandwiches.
10. That is better than waiting for two hours.

Activity #1  Fill the  Cards 

( Reading, Writing and Speaking activity  ) ( 10 min)

-       Ask students to work in pairs and sit back to back. Then, one students from each pair is going to be student "A" and the other one is going to be student "B". Then, students are  given a little worksheet in which they and read a conversation between friends and fill in the spaces according to the information that the partner is going to provide. 

-       Next, ask some of the students to pass to the front to perform the conversation.

Activity #1 (writing, speaking  activity ) (20 min)

Tittle: What did you do in your last birthday?
-Ask students to create a short questionnaire about What did they do in their last birthday?and then interview their classmates.
-  Students can add their own answer using the simple past.
-Then, students walk around and interview each other to finish the activity. When everyone has finished, the students talk about their findings.
